Meet the Routers: Q&A with Shahin Anjum

Sofar Ocean

Meet Shahin Anjum, Routing Specialist

Effective voyage optimization requires more than accurate forecasts. It demands an understanding of how vessels actually behave at sea, how crews experience conditions on board, and how to communicate clearly when those conditions are changing. Shahin brings nearly 15 years of experience across vessel operations, weather routing, and vessel performance management to Sofar Ocean's routing team, including time as a Navigating Officer before transitioning to shore-based roles.

At Sofar Ocean, Shahin supports maritime weather routing and voyage optimization through Wayfinder, working directly with vessel crews and shoreside operators to improve safety, fuel efficiency, and voyage outcomes. For Shahin, better data and more informed decision-making lead to safer, more sustainable operations across the maritime industry.

Why Sofar Ocean?

Sofar first came onto my radar during the rapid growth of the climate tech industry post COVID. What immediately stood out to me was the company's ambitious mission to connect the world's oceans through the design, deployment, and operation of the largest privately owned network of marine weather sensors. By transforming real-time ocean data into some of the world's most accurate marine weather forecasts, Sofar empowers customers to improve operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and equips governments and stakeholders with tools to better understand the impacts of climate change on extreme weather and ocean health.

When I joined the team, I was presented with numerous opportunities to contribute meaningfully to this mission—supporting voyage optimization initiatives, strengthening client relationships, and helping drive the growth of vessels utilizing our services. It has been incredibly rewarding to see Sofar continue to expand its reach while maintaining a high standard of quality and customer focus.I am excited to work alongside such a talented and innovative team as we continue to grow and advance the ocean intelligence needed to build a more sustainable future. We truly live on Planet Ocean, and I am proud to be part of an organization whose work not only enhances maritime efficiency but also contributes to a deeper understanding and protection of the oceans that sustain us all.

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that the work I do has a direct impact on the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of maritime operations. Recommending routes that help vessels avoid severe weather while saving time and fuel gives me a real sense of purpose, especially knowing that these decisions can improve the experience on board and reduce unnecessary emissions. Seeing a Captain accept a recommendation I’ve made is incredibly fulfilling—it represents a shared success in protecting crews, optimizing operations, and supporting a healthier ocean. Equally rewarding is the trust we build with our shoreside partners by providing clarity, confidence, and high-quality support. At the end of each day, I take pride in knowing that our vessels are operating safely, our clients feel supported, and our work is contributing to a more efficient and sustainable future for the maritime industry.

When conditions are changing quickly, what factors matter most when deciding the best route?

Developing an optimal vessel route requires the careful evaluation of multiple operational factors, with safety serving as the foremost consideration in every routing decision. Meteorological conditions, including winter storms and tropical cyclones, can evolve rapidly, and forecast guidance may change significantly within a short period. As a result, the initial routing recommendation is always designed to mitigate risk by avoiding hazardous weather systems, adverse sea states, and unfavorable oceanographic conditions.

Once a safety-focused routing solution has been established, additional analyses are conducted to identify opportunities for voyage optimization and improved fuel efficiency. While achieving economic benefits for the client remains an important objective, these considerations must never compromise the safety of the vessel, crew, or cargo. I also assess vessel motion risks, such as synchronous and parametric rolling, through the evaluation of forecast wave spectra, encounter periods, and vessel heading relative to prevailing swell systems. Routing strategies are then refined to minimize the likelihood of dynamic instabilities, thereby enhancing onboard safety and crew comfort throughout the voyage.

In situations where forecast guidance varies between model updates, effective communication becomes particularly important. I aim to provide stakeholders with a clear understanding of the rationale behind each routing recommendation, the key factors being monitored, and the potential implications of evolving conditions. This transparent approach fosters trust, supports informed decision-making, and ensures that all parties remain aligned and prepared in the face of uncertainty.

What are some of the biggest challenges vessels face when planning and executing voyages today, and how can routing help address them?

The maritime industry is operating in an increasingly complex and volatile environment. Severe weather events, fluctuating fuel prices, evolving regulatory requirements, geopolitical uncertainties, and charter party obligations have significantly compressed decision-making timelines. Operational decisions that once allowed for extended analysis must now often be made within minutes, frequently relying on forecast methodologies that have seen limited advancement over recent decades.

Against this backdrop, maritime teams are required to balance demanding schedules, fuel consumption targets, and commercial objectives while continuously adapting to changing meteorological and oceanographic conditions. Variability in forecast guidance can directly affect a vessel's ability to achieve voyage objectives and may introduce additional risks to the safety of the crew, cargo, and vessel. Continuous monitoring, timely routing recommendations, and data-driven operational support are therefore essential to enable both shipboard and shoreside stakeholders to make informed decisions that uphold safety, optimize efficiency, and maintain schedule integrity.Being an ex-marine myself, I understand the operational realities and the importance of receiving guidance that is both reliable and practical. Supporting vessels through optimized routing and performance insights is particularly meaningful because it directly contributes to safer operations, improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and enhanced voyage outcomes.

This is where Wayfinder delivers significant value. By strengthening the quality of the information underpinning routing, speed, and ETA decisions, it enables operators to respond with greater confidence to an increasingly dynamic operating environment. Better data and more informed decision-making ultimately lead to safer, more efficient, and more sustainable outcomes across the maritime value chain.
