Meet the Routers: Q&A with Jessica Topal

Sofar Ocean

Meet Jessica Topal, Senior Routing Specialist

At sea, conditions rarely stand still — and neither does our routing team. Working around the clock, they help vessels make safe, informed decisions throughout every voyage. Using advanced weather routing for ships, routers analyze the latest maritime weather forecast alongside performance data to guide crews through changing conditions. This approach helps crews adjust routes in real time, improving safety and supporting voyage optimization even when weather patterns shift.

Jessica is trusted to handle some of the most complex and high-stakes routing scenarios. With more than a decade of experience in weather routing, she brings deep expertise to the decisions vessels rely on every day while also supporting teammates across the routing team.

Since joining Sofar in 2023, Jessica has become a go-to voice for second opinions and a trusted partner for customers navigating challenging conditions at sea. She’s passionate about strengthening collaboration between routers and crews to help deliver safer, more effective outcomes on every voyage.

Why Sofar?

Coming from a routing background, I had always known about Sofar. I became even more excited about the company when I realized I could help shape the development of Wayfinder and our routing workflows. The chance to problem solve in a creative, collaborative way felt like a perfect fit. What keeps me here is the incredible team and our shared commitment to doing better for the world.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is recommending routes that save time and fuel while keeping ships out of heavy weather. I take real pride in knowing that each decision I make can improve the experience on board while also helping reduce unnecessary emissions. Seeing a Captain’s acceptance of a suggestion I made is not only a personal victory, but a win for safety, efficiency, and the ocean.

When conditions are changing quickly, what factors matter most when deciding the best route?

When forecast conditions fluctuate between model runs, clear communication matters most. My goal is to keep all parties aligned by thoroughly explaining our decision-making process: why we recommend a given route today, what we are watching for, and how our strategy would shift if the forecast changes. This transparency builds trust and helps teams stay prepared when conditions are uncertain.

What are some of the biggest challenges vessels face when planning and executing voyages today, and how can routing help address them?

Forecast uncertainty, especially in the mid to long range, is one of the biggest challenges vessels face when planning voyages. That is why daily guidance can make a real difference. The value of routing is in continuously providing updates in our suggestion as the forecast evolves and confidence increases while the vessel is underway. Daily guidance can improve time and distance efficiency while also reducing exposure to adverse weather, all of which could not have been as accurately predicted from the start of the voyage.
